Can an unknown American ultra-luxury EV brand truly challenge Tesla in a sophisticated European market like France, or is it aiming for a different prize entirely? As Lucid officially prepares to launch its operations in France in the first quarter of 2027, the stage is set for an intriguing battle in the premium electric vehicle segment. While the American manufacturer is currently less known in France, its strategy clearly targets the high-end market, positioning its Lucid Air sedan and Lucid Gravity SUV as uncompromising luxury contenders.

Lucid plans to open its first three retail and service locations in France in the first quarter of 2027, with a rapid expansion to more than 16 partner locations by the end of 2027, according to Yahoo Finance. This move extends Lucid's European presence beyond Scandinavia, signaling a broader ambition to capture a segment of the premium EV market.

The Ultra-Luxury Differentiator

Lucid's approach hinges on a distinct ultra-luxury proposition, emphasizing extreme range, supercar speed, and next-level luxury at every turn. The Lucid Air sedan, for instance, boasts up to an impressive 512 miles of EPA-estimated range for the Grand Touring model with 19-inch wheels, aiming to offer a driving experience that combines relentless performance with long-distance capability. Its sibling, the Lucid Gravity SUV, is designed as an uncompromising family hauler with space for up to seven, with performance versions like the Gravity GT-S unleashing 1,070 horsepower.

This focus on pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle performance and opulent comfort is, in our view, Lucid's primary weapon against more established players. The starting price for the Lucid Air in Europe is stated to be €86,900, positioning it firmly in the upper echelons of the market. This strategy appears to target a niche that, arguably, even Tesla has not fully occupied, with some market observers suggesting Tesla has, perhaps inadvertently, ignored the "true-luxury" segment by focusing on broader premium appeal. Lucid seems determined to fill that void.
